Robinet Christian

I am a visual artist working in a multi-media mode–incorporating paint, pastels, beading, embroidery and found objects.

Twenty-six years ago, I started to make jewelry, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, sculptures–and this has been one of my most rewarding endeavors. At first, I sold to co-workers, then I became a sidewalk merchant (it was so enlightening to discuss these creations with others).

Cheryl Patrice Derricotte

(Artist Cheryl Patrice Derricotte)

In the late 1990’s Cheryl Patrice Derricotte returned to art. In 1999, she began attending the Corcoran College of Art and Design during evenings and weekends, studying under the guidance of renowned ceramicist Margaret Boozer (www.margaretboozer.com) and the wonderful stone sculptor/educator, the late Slaithong ‘Somsri’ Smutzhart.

At the encouragement of Tate (2003), she began learning glass-blowing at the Penland (NC) School of Crafts , where she studied large-scale glass with Therman Statom (www.thermanstatom.com). While on vacation later that year, she followed up with a beginning cane workshop at the Bay Area Glass Institute with Treg Silkwood (www.silkwoodglass.com).

The next year (2004) Cheryl received Penland’s Christy Wright Scholarship in Glass and returned for a two-month cane and murrine concentration with Claire Kelly and Anthony Shafermeyer(www.schafermeyerkellyglass.com).

Cheryl recently completed a two-day intensive using text and imagery on glass with Susan Taylor Glasgow(www.taylorglasgow.com) at the Pittsburgh Glass Center (2007).

Commenting on her visual arts education Cheryl says:
‘I appreciate the experience of learning in non-traditional settings from these wonderful teachers who are some of the greatest artists of our time. Whether a one-day workshop or the rarer two-month sojourn, I always leave their company inspired and ready to make new and better work when I come home to my own little studio.’

A native Washingtonian, Cheryl Patrice Derricotte’s work has been exhibited widely in the Washington , DC metropolitan region. Her work has been a juried inclusion in ‘Terrestrial Forces’ at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts (October 2004); ‘Contemporary Glass’ at the San Francisco Airport Museum (June 2005-January 2006) and Zenith Gallery Presents: ‘Washington Glass’ (2007) and ‘Black Matter’ (2008).
